Sillamäe is located near the Gulf of Finland, on the estuary of the Sõtke river. The industrial city was 'created' in 1946 when it was decided to establish a metallurgy plant there that reprocesses oil shale ore to get uranium oxides. Due to this industry, the city was closed off for a long time.

Today, you have the possibility to examine the buildings from the post-war period of Stalin, classical style avenues, and museums. Sillamäe Museum and the exhibition of the Sillamäe Museum branch in the Sillamäe Cultural Centre offer town excursions on request.

Мемориал расположен на западном склоне холма Гренадеров нв высотах Синимяэ, недалеко от старого кладбища Вайвара.

Он символизирует битву на Синимяэских высотах во время Второй мировой войны между советскими и немецкими войсками.

Первый памятник в районе Голубых холмов - Синимяэ – 6,5-метровый деревянный крест – был установлен здесь в 1994 году. Нынешний мемориал был воздвигнут в 2000 году. 12-метровый стальной скандинавский круглый крест, возвышающийся над территорией земли размером в 1 гектар, был спроектирован скульптором-кузнецом Х. Мюллером. В середине креста находится композиция, изображающая взрыв. В 2004 году к мемориалу был добавлен памятник в честь 20-й гренадерской дивизии Ваффен-СС. Два года спустя были добавлены памятники в память о голландских и валлонских добровольцах, сражавшихся бок о бок с эстонцами.

Холм Гренадеров регулярно переходил из рук в руки от одного сражения к другому. Последний пункт обороны, известный как "Адская дыра", находился примерно в 100 метрах к востоку от мемориального креста.

The designer of the defence fortifications was a military engineer and architect Erik Dahlberg. A total of seven bastions were built on his initiative: Honor, Gloria, Victoria, Fama, Triumph, Fortuna, and Spes. An existing bastion called Wrangel was renamed as Pax, i.e. peace in English.

All bastions, except Fama, have survived at least partially. Victoria is the mightiest of the seven, with its walls, casemates and gunpowder storehouse restored for tourism purposes. Also Honor and Gloria are planned to be restored.

Narva-Jõesuu beach is covered with fine sand and lined with a pine forest. It's also well-known for its unique natural environment and is the longest beach in Estonia, running 7.5 km on the south shore of the Gulf of Finland.
