Sillamäe (town)

Sillamäe is located near the Gulf of Finland, on the estuary of the Sõtke river. The industrial city was 'created' in 1946 when it was decided to establish a metallurgy plant there that reprocesses oil shale ore to get uranium oxides. Due to this industry, the city was closed off for a long time.

Today, you have the possibility to examine the buildings from the post-war period of Stalin, classical style avenues, and museums. Sillamäe Museum and the exhibition of the Sillamäe Museum branch in the Sillamäe Cultural Centre offer town excursions on request.

Vaivaros Mėlynųjų kalnų muziejus ir mūšio lauko memorialas

This museum is located in the renovated barn of Vaivara Manor in the small borough of Sinimäe.

Its exhibition showcases the World War II battle of the Narva River and the Blue Hills in 1944. It displays firearms, uniforms, soldiers' personal belongings, wartime photographs, propaganda posters from both sides and more. A big screen shows historical films and documentaries. Despite the topic of war being difficult for some, the exhibition is intended for all ages: while parents can concentrate on the history and the details, the children can interact with the items on display. Historical battlefronts (the 3rd defensive line of St Petersburg and the German East Wall defensive line known as the Tannenberg Line) can be found near the museum.

Sinimägede (Blue Hills) battlefield memorial

This memorial is situated on the western slope of Grenaderimägi Hill in the Blue Hills near the old Vaivara cemetery.

It symbolises the battle fought in the Blue Hills during World War II between Soviet and German forces.

The first monument in the Blue Hills area – a 6.5-metre wooden cross – was erected here in 1994. The current memorial was completed in 2000. The 12-metre steel cross, which towers over a hectare of land, was designed by artist and blacksmith H. Müller. In the middle of the cross is a composition depicting an explosion. In 2004, a monument in honour of the 20th Waffen Grenadier Division was added to the memorial. Two years later, monuments commemorating the Dutch and Walloon volunteers who fought alongside the Estonians were added.

Grenaderimägi Hill regularly changed hands from one battle to the next. The last point of defence, known as the ‘Hellhole’, was around 100 metres to the east of the memorial cross.

Narva Museum
The Narva Museum today includes Narva Castle, the Northern Yard, and the Art Gallery. These are more than architectural monuments, as the castle and the gallery also have exhibition halls.

The new exhibition of Narva Castle talks about the history of Narva from the 13th century until the beginning of the 20th century.

In 1991, the Art Gallery was opened. This allowed the museum to host Estonian and foreign art exhibitions in addition to displaying its own art collection.

The Northern Yard is how Narva Museum showcases a district of artisans dating from the 17th century. Currently, there are four historical craft workshops for everyone who is interested.

The Narva Museum is exciting for the entire family!
Narva Bastions
In the 17th century, Narva was a city on the border between Sweden and Russia, which Sweden wanted to turn into its regional capital.

The designer of the defence fortifications was a military engineer and architect Erik Dahlberg. A total of seven bastions were built on his initiative: Honor, Gloria, Victoria, Fama, Triumph, Fortuna, and Spes. An existing bastion called Wrangel was renamed as Pax, i.e. peace in English.

All bastions, except Fama, have survived at least partially. Victoria is the mightiest of the seven, with its walls, casemates and gunpowder storehouse restored for tourism purposes. Also Honor and Gloria are planned to be restored.
