Jelgava Holy Trinity Church tower Muziejus
Located in the center of Jelgava city
The bell tower of the Holy Trinity Church in Jelgava is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Jelgava. The construction of the church began in 1574 by order of the Duke of Courland and Semigallia G. Kettler. It was one of the first newly built Lutheran stone churches in Europe. After the church was destroyed in 1944, it was not restored, but the bell tower remained in its place. In November 2010, after extensive reconstruction works, the church bell tower was reborn in a new form.
Jelgava St. Trinity Church tower houses 3 historical exhibitions. One of them tells about the history and symbols of the city from its foundation to the present day, lost pearls of Jelgava and modern achievements. The model “Lost Jelgava” allows you to get to know the layout of Jelgava in different periods with the help of augmented reality.
The story of another exhibition is dedicated to the history of the church, the lost architectural and interior values. Visitors are invited to forget the daily routine, meditatively thinking about eternal values and the course of life, listening to audio stories, supplemented with a specially created sound design. The meditation room with an audio background specially adapted for this exhibition uses references to L. Garūta's cantata “God, Your Land is Burning!”. The cantata was once performed in the church before its destruction in 1944.
