Duration: 1 day
Lavassāre – Pērnavas-Jēgupi – Pergupehja (Põrgupõhja)

The 55 km long route in Western Estonia leads through places related to World War II and post-war events, allowing you to learn about the fate of German prisoners of war, memorial sites of the War of Independence and the national partisan or Forest Brothers resistance movement. At the end of the journey, in the Pergupehja bunker, visitors can gain an authentic insight into the life of the Forest Brothers and the fight against the Soviet occupation.

What the tour includes

The Estonian Railway Museum is the only narrow-gauge railway museum in Estonia that also has a working steam locomotive among its exhibits. The museum has more than 80 rolling stock units, including five steam locomotives, and various technical equipment, most of which are on display outdoors. The indoor exhibition features more than 700 historical photographs, objects and documents about the Estonian narrow-gauge railway. The site of the Lavasaari German prisoner-of-war camp allows you to imagine the post-war period in a quiet and reflective environment, when prisoners of war worked here in peat bogs and lived in cramped conditions, while also being aware that this place is also a memorial to people whose lives ended far from home. The Pärnu-Jēgupi War Memorial allows you to experience the meaning of the memorial site, observing the multi-layered obelisk with a gilded Cross of Freedom and the names of the fallen, while learning that the monument was originally unveiled in 1922, later demolished and restored in 1989, thus preserving the stories of local soldiers. The Ertsma Bunker Battle Memorial allows students to learn about the 1949 battle, where NKVD units with hundreds of soldiers surrounded the Forest Brothers bunker. The original Põrgupõhja bunker was built in 1947 and served as one of the Forest Brothers' support points. In 2015, a reconstruction of the bunker was unveiled. A few dozen meters away, the site of the bunker destroyed by the NKVD can be seen, as well as an earthen rampart and a memorial stone for the fallen Forest Brothers.
