On the destruction of the Latvian Army armored vehicle "Zemgalietis"
The destruction of the Latvian Army armored vehicle "Zemgalietis", which was assigned to the 181st Rifle Division of the 24th Territorial Corps of the Red Army, at the gates of Balvi on July 2, 1941
"At 11:35 a.m., the 4th Tank Reconnaissance Battalion near Rugājie seized the bridge, which is in serviceable condition for all vehicles. The number of Latvian defectors is increasing.
At 2:15 p.m., the forward unit of Kruger's battle group is near Balvi, which they passed through without resistance.
At 15.10, the reconnaissance unit reports a strong enemy retreat in the direction of Viļaka. Units of the 181st (Latvian) Rifle Division, which retreated through Balvi, were attacked by the 1st Battalion of the 113th Motorized Infantry. The enemy column was completely crushed. Anti-tank guns, machine guns and a large number of cars were taken as trophies. The supply units of the 181st Rifle Division were completely destroyed on the Balvi–Viļaka road. Since the forward movement is slow due to poor road conditions, a large part of the enemy managed to retreat."
The rear services column of the 181st Division of the 24th Territorial Rifle Corps of the Red Army, retreating from Gulbene to Ostrov. In order to bring the corps into combat order, on June 30 at 23:00 the headquarters of the Northwestern Front of the Red Army ordered the division to retreat and take up defensive positions on the Latvian-USSR border, between Ostrov and Opochka. The march was to begin on the morning of July 1. The planned route of the 181st Rifle Division was Gulbene, Balvi, Viļaka (to be reached on the evening of July 2). However, on July 2 the column was destroyed by the front units of the German 1st Panzer Division.
