Service in Mõntu Battery No. 458

Recollections of a soldier who served in the battery

A person who served in the battery recalls: Sailor Vasily Ivan's son Musinov was born on April 6, 1927 in the village of Korolyov, Kostroma region. In 1945 he was sent to the Baltic Fleet training group in Leningrad, after which he received the rank of air defense commander in May 1945 and was sent to serve in the isolated 18th coastal defense division in Saaremaa, which was located in Sõrve. A total of 150 men served in the Mõntu battery No. 458, who lived in a barracks made of wooden shields. There was a separate canteen and a wooden observation tower for the rangefinder.

The American Mark 12 cannons weighed 1,610 kilograms, had a barrel length of 5.685 meters, a firing rate of 15 rounds per minute, and a firing range of 16.6 kilometers.

The events in the Irbeni Strait were constantly monitored, and the training alarm signal was often sounded. In 1950, the battery was transferred to Riga, where it continued to serve as a 100 mm battery.
