World War I bunkers near Vilcinii Įtvirtinimas
It is located on the side of the gravel road that leads from Kščevo to Biruliški. On the site of the old train home. In a wooded area. There is a tourist information board with a map of the region and a cycling route near the group of bunkers.
World War I positions created for the 77th Reserve Artillery Division as battery positions. Initially, artillery positions were tried to be taken near the abandoned houses, where the soldiers could live and rest. Later, 3 large concrete bunkers have been built. The positions were about 6 kilometers from the front line. The range of the more widely used howitzers and field guns at Germany's disposal ranged from 7.8 (7.7 cm Fieldkanone 96 nA) to 10.7 km (7.7 cm Feldkanone 16). The train houses were not restored after the war and currently only the place name remains on the maps.
Currently, the battery positions show ammunition storage bunkers, personnel shelters and possibly a battery command post, designed with larger windows facing the road. The bunkers have concrete covers that were reinforced inside with wooden beams. Some of the wooden beams still remain. Wartime photos with descriptions are placed inside the bunkers, which allow the observer to better understand and feel the conditions of those times.
