World War II in Kaunas and Soviet spy games
The route is located in Kaunas and introduces the stages of Lithuania's military history - from the First and Second World Wars to the Soviet occupation and the Cold War. Students will visit Kaunas Fort IX, the KGB nuclear bunker and the Vytautas the Great War Museum, where they can understand war crimes and repressions, as well as the activities of the secret services and the development of military equipment.
What the tour includes
On this excursion, students will be able to get to know different pages of Lithuania's military history – from fortresses and war crimes to secret services and military equipment. At the Kaunas Fort IX Museum, students will see the historical fortress, learn about its significance in World War I, the actions of the Soviet and Nazi regimes, and the victims of the Jewish genocide – a place where the Nazis killed approximately 50,000 people. The memorial complex and monuments will help to understand the cruelty of war and respect for the victims. At the KGB Nuclear Bunker Museum, students will be able to see secret service equipment and equipment, such as secret cameras and KGB workplaces. The museum also introduces civil defense equipment, including a collection of gas masks, and shows how people lived under constant tension and surveillance during the Cold War. At the Vytautas the Great War Museum, students will be able to get to know Lithuania's military history from the times of the War of Independence to the present day. The exhibition features ancient and modern weapons, soldiers' uniforms, awards, military equipment samples, as well as stories about legendary pilots and military events that will help to understand the importance of national defense.
