I Wars of Independence

Zarasai-Daugavpils operation - the last operation of the Lithuanian army against the Bolshevik army on the territory of Lithuania, which was carried out on August 23 - September 1, 1919. Since June 1919, the Bolshevik forces had established themselves on the Zarasai Lakes line, but their army was exhausted and tired. On August 22, 1919, the Supreme Commander of the Lithuanian Army, Gen. S. Žukauskas, ordered the Ukmergė detachment of the Lithuanian army to launch an offensive on the entire front from August 23 and occupy Daugavpils. Successfully attacking, the Lithuanian army forces occupied Zarasai and Smalvas on August 25, and on August 27, Lithuanian army units reached the Turmantas railway station. On August 28 - 31 The offensive continued and Lithuanian army units occupied the estates of Graudinė, Šventmuižė, Kriviškės, Šarlotės and Kalkonės, the villages of Kaupiškės and Raguliškės, until they finally reached Alūksna, the Kalkuonė railway station and approached the Daugava River and the city of Daugavpils. On August 30, 1919, the Prime Minister of the Republic of Lithuania Mykolas Sleževičius officially congratulated the Lithuanian army for expelling the Bolsheviks from Lithuanian territory. After pushing the Bolsheviks beyond the Daugava, the 1st Infantry Regiment was transferred to guard the demarcation line from Jiezna to Zarasai, the 1st Battalion of the 2nd Infantry Regiment - from Niklovka to Kalkūnai, the 2nd Battalion - from Turmantas to Kalkūnai, and the 3rd Battalion was transferred to the city of Zarasai. These battles ended the first stage of the Lithuanian military's fight for independence, during which the Red Army was expelled from Lithuanian territory.
