Nikolai Petrov - a hero silenced by Soviet military history
Lieutenant Commander Nikolai Petrov was the commander of the submarine Shch-307. On August 10, 1941, Shch-307 sank the German submarine U-144 with a torpedo attack near Hiiumaa. This was the first confirmed victory of the submariners of the Baltic Fleet in the ongoing war. In early October 1941, Nikolai Petrov was arrested and sentenced to 10 years in prison under the notorious Article 58 (counter-revolutionary activities, treason). He died in captivity during the blockade of Leningrad the same year. In 1975, the sentence was canceled and the criminal case was closed. Today, a replica of the conning tower of the submarine Shch-307 is an exhibit at the Poklonnaya Hill Memorial in Moscow. Petrov's heroic deed has not yet received the recognition it deserves.
