Tarvydai (Rumšai) Anti-Aircraft Missile Base
Infrastructure

In the forest west of Rumšai and Tarvydai, on the right side of the Pašyšiai–Verdainė road (4220), driving along the forest path (Šalpusnių g.).
In the forest west of Rumšiai and Tarvydai, an anti-aircraft missile base was located during the Soviet era. It belonged to the 169th Warsaw Red Banner Bohdan Khmelnytskyi Order of the Soviet Army's anti-aircraft missile brigade. The brigade, established in 1967, had its headquarters in Ragainė (Neman) in the Kaliningrad region, and its divisions were deployed in the Kaliningrad region and in the southwestern part of occupied Lithuania (near Kalotė, Kairiai, Pagėgiai, Tarvydai, Vilkyčiai, and a mobile missile complex was deployed near Užliekniai). The division group deployed near Tarvydai had the call sign Чешуя and was armed with S-200 long-range missile systems. These missile systems, which appeared in 1967 (and are still in use today), were intended for the destruction of bombers and other strategic aircraft, and could reach targets at a distance of 200 km, and later modifications - at a distance of 255 km. In 1992–1993, the territory and buildings of the technical division of this group were transferred to the Lithuanian Ministry of National Defence. Now the former base is abandoned and is falling into disrepair. Fans of abandoned places will find the ruins of barracks and technical premises, as well as traces of missile launch sites.
