The fiercest battles of the First World War on the territory of Latvia took place near Daugavpils in August and October 1915, precisely in the highlands around Ilūkste and Medumi. The Germans tried to break through to Daugavpils, but the Russians drove them back. The city of Ilūkste with its unique Catholic church and monastery complex was completely destroyed in the fighting. Neither side achieved success and began to dig in, creating echeloned three-line defensive positions.

Today, the evidence of past battles has become an attraction for military tourism enthusiasts. The guesthouse houses a private collection of antiques, including artifacts from the First World War.
