World War I bunkers near Vilciņi Bunker
Located on the side of the gravel road leading from Krščeva to Biruliškis. On the site of the old Vilciņi home. In a wooded area. A tourist information board with a map of the region and a cycling route is located near the group of bunkers.
The First World War positions were built for the 77th Reserve Artillery Division as battery positions. Initially, artillery positions were sought to be occupied near abandoned houses where soldiers could live and rest. Later, 3 large concrete bunkers were built. The positions were located approximately 6 kilometers from the front line. The range of the more widely used howitzers and field guns at the disposal of Germany ranged from 7.8 (7.7cm Fieldkanone 96 nA) to 10.7 km (7.7 cm Feldkanone 16 ). The train houses were not restored after the war and currently only the place name remains on the maps.
Currently, the battery positions include ammunition storage bunkers, personnel shelters and, possibly, a battery command post, which was designed with larger windows facing the road. The bunkers have concrete floors that were reinforced with wooden beams on the inside. Some of the wooden beams still remain. Inside the bunkers, wartime photographs with descriptions are placed, which allow the observer to better understand and feel the conditions of those times.
