Monument to the War of Independence in Alatskivi
Memorial site
This monument is situated in the cemetery in the small borough of Alatskivi.
Designed by Voldemar Mellik, it was unveiled on 26 August 1928. It comprised a granite block supporting a statue of a soldier holding a sword, ready for combat. The monument was first demolished in November 1940. It was restored during the German occupation using the original pieces and unveiled anew on 26 July 1942. The monument mysteriously vanished in 1948. On 24 February 1990 the base of the monument was unveiled, featuring a depiction of the Cross of Liberty in metal. The new statue of the soldier, based on another sculpture of Mellik's in Rõuge, was fashioned by Endel Taniloo and unveiled on 24 June 1991.
