Langa's steep bank trenches Fortification
Located 1.5 km from Vecāķi, Kalngale or Trīsciemas.
On the steep bank of the Langa River, there is part of the trenches that were built by the German army in 1944 to protect Riga against the attacking Soviet army. The first line of defense was located here, as Hitler had ordered the city to be held. Riga could have suffered the fate of Jelgava, where everything was destroyed to the ground, but it was saved by the fact that the Soviet army broke through the German front line near Vilnius and Riga was threatened with encirclement. The German army retreated to Courland and Riga did not become a front-line fortification.
It is interesting to look at the trenches that stretch along the top of the steep bank and face the sea. Here the Germans had created the so-called "bag" - the enemy is let in, as if deeper into their rear and then destroyed by crossfire (from three sides). Further towards Vecmīlgrāvijas there is another dune rampart with trenches against which the attacking enemy would then also run into and be caught in the bag.
Today, this place displays impressive trenches in a beautiful seaside forest.
