The site of the Jesuit Church in Daugavpils Fortress
Between 1737 and 1746, a new stone church was built in the Baroque style on the site of an old Jesuit church. The church dominated the city landscape for a long time, as the height of the towers reached 60 meters! In May 1811, the church was transformed into an Orthodox church, and in August - into the Daugavpils Fortress Cathedral. Between 1928 and 1940, the garrison Lutheran community operated in the church. There is information that during the mentioned period there were altars for Lutherans, Catholics and Orthodox. During the Second World War, the facade and towers of the building were destroyed during artillery fire. In the middle of the last century, the destroyed walls were removed and a square was created.
