Hara Harbour Infrastruktūra

Hara Harbour is situated in the village of the same name in Harju County.
There was a border guard outpost on the shoreline facing the island of Hara which was used during both the imperial era and the era of independence prior to World War II. The outpost was taken over by the Soviet Border Guard during the occupation of Estonia. A military harbour – the historic Hara submarine base or degaussing station – was constructed nearby. Degaussing was done using underwater technical facilities and enabled ship and submarine hulls to repel magnetic mines.
The whole port area used to be a restricted zone. Currently the port houses a visitor centre and is used as a marina. The history of the base can be explored on site, with the quay and ruins also accessible to visitors.

On 25.08.2024 there was a collapse in the harbor and the exhibition hall (part of the demagnetising center) sank into the water. The exhibition will be moved to another location in the port. The visitor center is still open.

“Demagnetization was carried out using underwater technical means and allowed the hulls of ships and submarines to avoid magnetic mines.” In fact, everything was not like that. “Underwater technical means” are entire fields of magnetic, electromagnetic and acoustic sensors, the signals from which, when ships and submarines passed over them, were transmitted to the shore premises, where they were processed. After the initial passage, the windings of the demagnetizing devices were switched on the ships themselves being tested. Then a second pass over the sensors and new measurements. And so consistently approaching the minimum own physical fields of the ship. Sometimes it took several days.
