The Cross of Vytis is the highest Lithuanian military order.
The Order of the Cross of Vytis is the highest military order of the Republic of Lithuania, established on July 20, 1919 during the War of Independence. The order is intended to reward heroic courage in defending the freedom and independence of Lithuania.
The predecessor of the Order of the Cross of Vytis, the Cross for the Homeland, was established on July 20, 1919, taking into account the proposal of Gen. S. Žuklauskas - to award the order to soldiers who distinguished themselves in battles. On April 1, 1927, the Law on the Cross of Vytis was adopted. On August 31, 1927, the Statute of the Cross of Vytis was approved. The Cross of Vytis was named the Order of the Cross of Vytis (the Cross of Vytis, marked No. 1, was awarded to the Commander-in-Chief of the Lithuanian Armed Forces S. Žukauskas, No. 2 - to President Antatas Smetona), on September 1, 1930 - the Order of the Cross of Vytis with swords was awarded to persons who showed valor on the battlefield, without swords - for merits during the war, but not necessarily in battle.
The badge of the Order of the Cross of Vytis consisted of a six-pointed enameled cross, in the center of its obverse – a medallion with Vytis, on the reverse – the legend FOR BRAVERY 1918 XI 23. After 1930. the award of the Order with Swords was abolished. The Order of Vytis had 5 degrees. In 1927–1940. the following persons were awarded the Order with Swords: 1st degree – 7, 2nd degree – 10, 3rd degree – 75, the Order without Swords: 1st degree – 1, 2nd degree – 22, 3rd degree – 76, after 1930. 4 persons were awarded the Order of the 4th degree.
