Bunker construction certificate
The diary of partisan Lionginas Baliukevičius Dzūkas describes the construction work of the bunker.
We finished digging the bunker anyway. It was very difficult work. The night is short and dark, you have to hurry, because you can't leave an unfinished and undisguised bunker for the day. If someone notices, don't live in that bunker. We worked like some fairy-tale robbers at a treasure: silently, stealthily, looking around, listening to the barking of dogs... We dug the bunker not high: just enough to walk while curled up. We could have dug deeper, but we reached the water.
Vanagas, Guoba and Rainys are left to finally equip the bunker. Me, Viesulas and Vieversys leave to bring things back. On the way we visit our old acquaintance. The woman complains about her current life.
"It would be better if that cuckoo didn't crow and that sun didn't shine on us," she says apathetically.
And indeed, that charming world, adorned with green meadows, bringing the anxious cuckoo's chirping and the melancholic partisan songs of boys and girls, seems to highlight the tragedy of our land even more. What a huge contrast between spring nature and human life! Nature comes to life, life awakens everywhere, but in people's lives there is nothing beautiful, nothing good, only mold, languor, agonizing waiting for something... How can people not suffer, knowing that this beautiful spring is not for them, it did not come to them...
... Tomorrow is the so-called day of the review of the working people's forces - the First of May. For communists, it is a day of joy. They will drink to the point of madness and worship their "father". They will drive people to rallies, order them to participate in processions, shout "hurray" at the top of their lungs, carry banners with slogans established by the Central Committee of the VKP(b)... And people will do everything they are ordered to do: shout "hurray", walk side by side past the stands, etc. Let only someone try to resist the party!
