Col. Lt. Col. Kukinas's memories from the Daugava Front

The memoirs testify to how Jonas Karutis, a war invalid, was wounded, lost one eye, but returned to continue fighting.

The memoirs tell how the soldiers of the Panevėžys detachment of the Lithuanian army approached the Daugava River and guarded the defense line near the river. It is noted that it was quiet, there was almost no fighting. The daily routine is emphasized, in which some soldiers were on guard, while others waited to leave the front and go visit their families.

Col. Kukinas shouted at the front - thus annoying the Red Army soldiers on the other bank of the Daugava River. Meanwhile, the Lithuanian soldiers drew lots to see who would survive the upcoming battles and who would not. Until finally, the soldiers led by Col. Kukinas were assigned the task of destroying the railway near Meškuičiai station. The task was not easy, since the ground was already covered with winter frost, but despite this, the soldiers began to dig through the frozen ground. Without a word, the battles began, in which Jonas Karutis, a war invalid who had already lost one eye in the battles, also participated. However, during the ongoing battles, J. Karutis was wounded again and after this injury he lay in the hospital for 18 months. A number of Lithuanian soldiers died in the battles mentioned by Col. Kukinas, and it is recorded how the wounded began to be transported to the military hospital, and the soldiers who had been treated there gathered to wait to see if they would see their acquaintances. The memoirs also document difficult conditions in the military hospital, the feeding of war invalids through the mouth, and deaths from pneumonia and other injuries.
