Memoirs of a soldier of the Panevėžys Regiment about the everyday life of war
Anonymous memoirs of an infantryman, published in the Lithuanian Riflemen's Union magazine "Trimitas", describing battles and military life during the Wars of Independence.
In 1921, the memoirs of a soldier of the Panevėžys Regiment, who took the anonymous pseudonym TB, were published, which testify to the soldier's experience. The memoirs begin with the tears of a sister when her brother went to the army, the "meat being cut on an unwashed board" in the barracks, the metal kettles from which they washed and ate. The soldiers' card games during their free time are emphasized, sleeping on haystacks, horses and carts that had run away from Bolshevik shooting, bullets whistling past their ears during battles, disorder in the ranks of the soldiers, the search for Bolsheviks in homesteads in Northern Lithuania and, of course, the late salaries in the army. The memoirs also write about the interrogation of Bolshevik prisoners, unpleasant and shocking injuries on the battlefields.
