On August 23, 1989, the three Baltic nations – Lithuanians, Latvians and Estonians – united for a historic event called the Baltic Way. On this day, to mark the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact and its secret protocols, an impressive action of peaceful resistance was organized. About 2 million people joined hands to form a human chain that stretched 650 kilometers from Vilnius through Riga to Tallinn. The Baltic Way became not only a symbol of solidarity, but also a strong message to the world about the determination of the Baltic States to restore their Independence.

One of the most important monuments testifying to this event is the sign standing on the border of Lithuania and Latvia, which was erected in 2014 at the initiative of the club of members of the Lithuanian Reorganization Movement initiative group and the organizers of the 1989 Baltic Way.
