Monument to soldiers who fell in World War I and the War of Independence
Memorial site
Located near the Burtnieki Evangelical Lutheran Church and rectory.
The "Heroes' Grove" planted in 1934 near the Burtnieki Evangelical Lutheran Church and the monument to the 56 sons of the Burtnieki congregation who fell in World War I and the War of Independence, unveiled on August 15, 1937, are visible.
The monument, whose bas-relief depicts a virgin leaning on a stele with her right elbow, is engraved with the names of the fallen parish members – 31 from Burtnieki, 13 from Rencēni and 12 from Jaunburtnieki parish.
The sculptor of the monument is Nikolajs Maulics.
The “Heroes’ Grove” and the monument are located next to the Burtnieki Evangelical Lutheran Church, which is one of the most striking examples of late Gothic and Baroque in Vidzeme. During the Soviet era, in the 1960s, the church was taken away from the congregation, it stood empty, was looted and demolished. The congregation was restored in 1988.
Next to the church is the Burtnieki rectory - built in the second half of the 18th century and renovated in the 1990s. The archive of the rectory houses old church books. There are records of people with birth data as far back as 1720.
