Käre battle field Battle site
In 1944, the 12th Luftwaffe Field Division was in a defensive position on the land of today's Käre farm, from the southern tip of Lake Võrtsjärv to the steep bend of the Väike Emajõgi River near Jõgeveste (opposite Käre). The 12th Luftwaffe Field Division's area of responsibility was located in the most difficult section of the Walk defense line. Many Estonians fought in the division. From December 27, 1943 to April 10, 1945, the division was commanded by Lieutenant General Gottfried Weber. The 30th Infantry Division was in defense from Käre to the stream between Reku and Sooru. The division commander was Major General Otto Barth.
The Soviet troops stationed on the Väike Emajõe-Koiva line were part of the 3rd Baltic Front. The front commander was Army General Maslennikov. The 67th Army of the front, commanded by Lieutenant General Romanovsky, occupied a position on the east bank of the Väike Emajõe from Pikassilla to the Piku forest ranger's house. On the right wing of the army fought the 122nd Rifle Corps of Major General Martõnchuk.
