Burial site of Hungarian prisoners of war
Memorial site
This burial site is situated in Priimetsa, near the former Soviet prisoner-of-war camp. During World War II, three prisoner of war camps were situated in Valga: the Frontstalag 347 branch camp, base camp Stalag 351 and transit camp Dulag 110. Following the German occupation, the camps were taken over by Soviet forces, who placed their own prisoners there. Germans made up the majority of these prisoners. They were followed by Austrians, Hungarians and a small number of Spaniards. It is estimated that 30 Hungarians were held there. Around 300 prisoners of war are buried at the camp site, but they are difficult to tell apart by nationality. Following the restoration of Estonia’s independence, the German Volksbund unveiled a memorial at the camp site.
