The Järvepalu reserve airfield in Võru County is one of the reserve airfields built on Estonian highways during the Soviet era. In the 1970s, a straighter and wider section of the road was built on the Võru–Mõniste–Valga highway near the village of Järvepalu, which could be used as a take-off and landing runway for military aircraft if necessary. There are two expanded areas next to the road, which were intended for parking and servicing aircraft. Similar road airfields were also located in Jägala, Vatla and near Mustvee. Järvepalu is a good example of covert military solutions in civilian infrastructure during the Cold War.
