The Vilask missile base in Valga County was unique in Estonia, as it housed the Soviet Strategic Missile Forces' R-12U medium-range missiles in underground vertical shafts. The base was part of the 846th Guards Missile Regiment. The approximately 35-meter-deep shaft launch facilities were six-story and connected to a central command post and service rooms. Specialists from the Leningrad metro construction team also participated in the construction. The Vilask division was taken off combat duty in 1981, and the missile forces left the area in the early 1980s. The missile shafts, which had become dangerous, were filled in in 2019, but the structure of the military landscape is still clearly visible.
