The construction of the Taara military town began in Võru in 1924, when new barracks and service buildings were built near the railway station. Along with the military town, the Taara garden town, intended for officers and civil servants, was formed in its neighborhood. By the 1930s, Võru had become one of the most important garrison towns in Estonia. After World War II, the town was used by the Soviet Army: tank and missile units were stationed here at various times. Since 1996, the Taara town has been used by the Estonian Defence Forces again, and the Kuperjanov Infantry Battalion is located here.
