Liivamäe Battle Memorial Cross Memorial site
The Battle of Liivamäe took place near Kilingi-Nõmme on July 4, 1941, the day after the local forest brothers had overthrown the Soviet government in the town. A unit of the destruction battalion was sent from Pärnu to retake Kilingi-Nõmme, which was opposed by a detachment of local forest brothers, former members of the Estonian Defence League and military personnel led by Major Paul-August Lilleleht on Liivamäe. In the battle that lasted almost three hours, the defenders received support from students of the Voltvet Forestry School and border guards, and the attack was repulsed. The memorial cross marks one of the most important clashes of the 1941 Summer War in Pärnu County.
