The port of Pärnu has been a military site during both world wars. In August 1915, a German naval unit attacked Pärnu, the aim of which was to make the port unusable. Three old steamers were sunk in the port mouth for this purpose. In July 1941, a similar action was repeated in the opposite situation: on the orders of the retreating Soviet Baltic Fleet, the cargo ship Everiga, sailboats and other vessels were sunk between the piers, and the port mouth was mined to prevent German troops from using the port. The history of the port of Pärnu clearly shows how important sea transport was in Estonian military logistics.
