The German military cemetery in Viljandi began burying German soldiers who fell in World War II in 1941. Later, those who fell were also brought here for reburial from elsewhere in Viljandi County, and most of the burials took place in 1943. Over 700 soldiers were buried in the cemetery. After the restoration of Soviet occupation in 1944, the grave markers were destroyed and the cemetery remained unkempt for decades. Under the leadership of the German War Graves Maintenance Association, restoration began in 1991, and the well-maintained cemetery was opened in 1993. Later, German soldiers who fell in World War I were also reburied here.
