In 1941, Soviet anti-aircraft battery No. 226 was established on Suur-Pakri Island, which was intended for four 76 mm anti-aircraft guns. Due to the outbreak of war, the construction of the battery was not completed, and the towed guns were transferred to the defense of Tallinn in the summer of 1941. However, concreted artillery positions and a large unfinished shelter pit have survived on the island. Later, Pakri Island was used as an extensive Soviet air force training ground, and an imitation runway was built directly near the battery as a target for air attacks. Thus, traces of coastal defense and a military training area are located side by side in the same landscape.
