Pääsküla bulrush shelter No. 3 was built as part of the Tallinn land front of the Peter the Great sea fortress in 1913–1917. The massive concrete shelter was intended to protect approximately 120 soldiers, and its entrances were designed so that fragments of explosions would not enter the interior directly. The structure had heavy metal doors, corridors and a connection to underground passages, and the concrete ceiling was several meters thick. The shelters and trenches around Pääsküla formed part of the southern defense line of Tallinn and are still some of the most striking surviving objects of the land front of the sea fortress.
