Paldiski Nuclear Research Reactor Complex
Military town
The Paldiski Soviet Naval Training Center was established in the 1960s to train nuclear submarine crews. The most secretive part of the center was the training nuclear reactor complex located in Leetse, which housed two working training benches with reactors. They simulated the power plants of a nuclear submarine and enabled submariners to be trained on land. After Estonia regained its independence, the reactor fuel was removed and Russia handed the facility over to Estonia on September 26, 1995. The reactor parts were left in place and surrounded by reinforced concrete protective structures. The complex is one of Estonia's most special military sites from the Cold War.
