Suurupi Coastal Defense Battery No. 1 Fortification
Suurupi Coastal Defense Battery No. 1, originally called the Romanov Battery, was planned as one of the most powerful coastal batteries of Peter the Great's sea fortress. Two armored towers were to be built south of the upper lighthouse of Suurupi, each with two 14-inch or 356 mm cannons. The battery's task was to keep the sea area west of Suurupi under fire as far as the islands of Paldiski and Pakri. During the construction work, two depressions measuring approximately 40 × 50 meters and 10 meters deep were built in the limestone, but the battery remained unfinished. The work was stopped in the spring of 1916 when it became clear that the planned armament could not be installed. Today, the two deep depressions at the base of the tower are primarily reminiscent of the magnificent defensive structure.
