The Battle of Valkla on January 3, 1919 marked an important turning point in the War of Independence: the advance of the Red Army towards Tallinn was stopped here, and Estonian troops soon launched a counterattack. In 1934, a stone was unveiled to commemorate the battle with the inscription “To this land and no further, January 3, 1919”. In 1937, an oak was planted next to it. The Soviet authorities destroyed the memorial stone in 1941 and also cut down the oak. The restored memorial was unveiled in 1989 and today marks the place where the tide of the War of Independence began to turn in Estonia’s favor.
