Suurupi Battery No. 3 was part of the coastal battery system of the Peter the Great Sea Fortress defending Tallinn. Construction began at the beginning of World War I and the battery was armed with 130 mm guns. During the Republic of Estonia, the position continued to operate as coastal battery No. 9 and its armament and fire control system were modernized. Military use of the area continued during the Soviet period, when new artillery positions and fire control facilities were built next to the old facilities. Therefore, Suurupi Battery reflects more than half a century of coastal defense development.
