Katariina Quay, located on Paljassaara, is part of the magnificent, but unfinished, complex of the Peter the Great Military Port. In 1911, plans were to build a breakwater several kilometers long here. Construction began in 1913 by the Belgian company Ackermans & van Haaren, and approximately 500 meters of the structure were completed. Concrete blocks weighing dozens of tons and granite brought from Finland were used in the construction of the quay. In 1912, Emperor Nicholas II laid a symbolic cornerstone here, marking the beginning of the construction of the Peter the Great Military Port. The quay has since been rebuilt several times.
