During World War II, a German coastal defense battery was located in the Valaste bank area. In 1944, it was part of the 532nd Artillery Division of the Navy and was armed with 10.5 cm guns. The battery positions were located on a narrow strip of land between the road and the bank and formed part of the extensive German defense system built on the Virumaa coast. Traces of artillery positions and other military installations can be distinguished on the terrain. The Valaste battery helps to understand how densely the northern coast of Estonia was fortified during the battles on the Narva Front in 1944.
