During World War II, the German military intelligence Abwehr intelligence and diversion school operated in Vihula. The school was established in the autumn of 1941 as part of the intelligence group AG 212 and was headed by Captain Kurt Reinhard. Among others, Soviet prisoners of war were recruited as agents from prison camps in Estonia, Latvia and the Leningrad region. They were prepared for intelligence and diversion tasks in the Soviet rear. In the spring of 1943, the school was moved to the Leningrad region, later it operated again in Estonia and was merged with the intelligence school in Vana-Nursi. This short but remarkable chapter in the history of Vihula Manor forms a sharp contrast to today's peaceful manor environment.
