Paldiski North Port Infrastructure

Paldiski Northern Port is located on the eastern side of the Pakri Peninsula. Its history is connected with the Paldiski military port, which was established in the 18th century during the Russian Empire. The importance of the port was increased by the construction of a railway in 1870, connecting Paldiski with Tallinn and St. Petersburg. During the Soviet era, Paldiski became an important military area and a closed city.

After the withdrawal of Soviet troops in 1994, the port area was littered with the wrecks of abandoned and sunken missile boats. It is estimated that around 13 such decommissioned boats were in the port around 1992. In order for the port to be used for civilian purposes, the wrecks were raised and the area was cleaned up.

After the restoration of Estonian independence, the Northern Port was developed as a commercial cargo port. Today, it is an important cargo port in Paldiski.
