Lithuanian partisan structures in Samogitia were formed on the basis of the opposition Lithuanian Freedom Army, which had been formed during the Nazi occupation. With the beginning of the Soviet occupation, members of the organizational sector of the aforementioned army transferred to military training and began organizing partisan units in Samogitia. In 1945, a partisan military unit was created on the basis of the Šiauliai District of the Lithuanian Freedom Army – the Samogitian Legion, uniting 500 partisans from Kretinga, Mažeikiai, Tauragė and Telšiai. In 1946, the Samogitian Legion became the Samogitian District of the Lithuanian partisans, and the bodies of the killed and tortured Samogitian partisans were buried on the right bank of the Pastauninkų stream. In memory of the killed partisans, a cross was erected at this place on October 15, 2000.
