In 1930–1932, the Independence Monument was built in the square of the town of Dusetė, as in many other places in Lithuania, by engineer Kazys Kriščiukaitis. The concrete monument consisted of a stepped pedestal and a statue of an ancient warrior holding a flag (author V. Čižauskas). The space around the monument became the main place for town residents to gather and celebrate holidays in the interwar period. During the Soviet occupation, in 1952, the monument was demolished, the statue was thrown into Lake Sartai, the pedestal was smashed and buried in the place where the monument stood. With the beginning of the National Revival in 1989, the residents of Dusetė expressed their desire to restore the old Independence Monument. In 1990, the pedestal of the monument was excavated, placed in its original position and restored by sculptor E. Kirmonienė. The composition of the current monument standing in Independence Square has characteristic architectural forms.
