Memorial site for the soldiers of the 2nd Border Guard Regiment of the Latvian Legion near the former "Grimma" houses
Memorial site
The memorial site is located in Iecava parish, near the Grimms' house, next to the Jelgava–Krustpils railway line.
The soldiers of the 2nd Latvian Border Guard Regiment who fell in September 1944 are buried here. In 1995, a memorial was unveiled here, installed by the Latvian National Soldiers' Association and the Daugava Hawks Iecava branch. The memorial consists of a "White Cross" and a memorial stone, which is made of a rectangular concrete parallelepiped supported by a foundation made of boulders. A granite slab is embedded in the concrete memorial, in which the text is engraved under the cross sign and next to the representation of the Latvian Legion uniform sleeve patch-shield:
ON THE HEDGEHOG'S HEAD,
PROTECT YOUR FATHER'S LAND
1944. AUGUST-SEPTEMBER.
FOR THE FALLEN IN BATTLE
2. BORDER GUARDS
FOR THE SOLDIERS OF THE REGIMENT
On the night of September 15, 1944, the 2nd Latvian Border Guard Regiment, then stationed in Riga, was urgently sent in cars to the Iecava district and involved in battles to eliminate the front line break near the Grimmi (Grimmi) house. The regiment withstood fierce defensive battles against Red Army tank and infantry units for four days. In two days, the regiment's soldiers shot down 13 enemy tanks. Latvian losses were also heavy - the regiment lost four fallen officers, including the commander of the 1st battalion, as well as 24 instructors and soldiers. In turn, eight officers and 161 instructors and soldiers were injured.
At the end of September, the regiment took up defensive positions on the Riga-Bauska highway in the Salmiņi house area.
The fallen soldiers of the 2nd Latvian Border Guard Regiment are also buried right there near “Grimmāi” on the other side of the railway, near nearby Ausmāi, as well as next to the Iecava–Baldone highway near “Dietlavāi” and “Būčāi”.
