The NKVD building-barracks in Darbėnai

In this house in 1944–1953, the headquarters of the NKVD-MVD-MGB Darbėnai sub-division operated, where partisans of the Samogitian Region Sword Squad, their supporters and liaisons, and lists of deportees were interrogated and tortured. The residential building was built in 1935. before the war and during World War II, the Darbėnai parish police station operated in it, and in 1944–1953, the Darbėnai department of the USSR Ministry of State Security (NKGB, MGB) was located here. In front of the building, on the Market Square, the bodies of partisans killed in Darbėnai parish were desecrated. The arrested were kept in the basement of the building. After the MGB sub-division was liquidated, the Darbėnai hospital operated in the building in 1953–2003. In the 20th century In the 1960s and 1970s, while preparing to build an extension in the hospital yard, human bones were found while digging the foundations, so construction was abandoned. In 1992–1993, while digging trenches for underground communications, the remains of three people were discovered in the yard, who were reburied in the Darbėnai cemetery in 1993. In 2000, a monumental cross was erected in the south-southwest part of the burial site.
