In Palanga, at the intersection of Meilės al. and J. Simpsono streets, there is a monument to James Young Simpson.

After the First World War, a conflict arose between the independent states of Lithuania and Latvia over the delimitation of borders. To resolve the interstate border dispute, both countries signed an arbitration agreement on 28 September 1920 to determine the border, and the super-arbitrator was James Young Simpson, a professor at the University of Edinburgh and a British diplomat, with the consent of both countries. The commission worked in 1920–1921 and decided to cede Palanga to Lithuania. In 1921, Lithuania and Latvia signed a border delimitation agreement, which implemented the decision of the arbitration commission.

On July 3, 2021, during the celebrations of the 100th anniversary of the return of Palanga to Lithuania, a monument to James Young Simpson was unveiled and a street named after him was named after him. The authors of the monument are sculptors Sergėjus Plotnikovas and architect Saulius Druskis.
