The monument to the 10th anniversary of Lithuania's Independence was built in 1928 by the Salantai Riflemen's Unit and a Riflemen's Garden (square) was formed around the monument. The path between the monument to the 10th anniversary of Lithuania's Independence and S. Darius and S. Girėna Streets was named Vytautas the Great Avenue in 1930. During the Soviet occupation, the monument was demolished, and in 1988–1989 it was rebuilt on the initiative of the Salantai Support Group of the Lithuanian Reorganization Movement. It is necessary to emphasize that two of the three parts of the monument are authentic, since the top of the monument erected in the interwar period was preserved by A. Donėla, a resident of Gargždelė, and the middle part by Petras Kalenda, a folk craftsman from Salantai. The new pedestal was made in early 1989 by workers of the Erlėnai auxiliary business workshop of the "Alka" collective farm. The monument was restored by stone master Kazimieras Orvidas. The monument was solemnly consecrated on February 16, 1989.
