Two years after the victory of the Lithuanian army over the Bermontites, in the late autumn of 1919, an initiative was raised in Saločiai and donations began to be collected for the construction of a monument to commemorate the victory and honor the fallen soldiers. The monument was erected in 1928 in the market square of the town of Saločiai. The monument consisted of a seven-meter obelisk, at the top of which shone a globe pierced by a sword. Its architectural form encoded the meaning that Lithuania had won its place among other countries of the world. During the post-war partisan battles, enemies scorned the bodies of the fallen partisans at the foot of the monument, and during the Soviet occupation around 1964 it was demolished. The monument was rebuilt in 1989 on the initiative of the Saločiai Sąjūdis group, with the support of members of the Latvian Popular Front and Panevėžys Sąjūdis.
