Monument to the Tenth Anniversary of Lithuanian Independence in Joniškis
Memorial site
In the town of Joniškis, at the intersection of Žagarės and Darbininkų St., there is a monument commemorating the 10th anniversary of Lithuania's Independence.
The monument was erected on October 2, 1928, to commemorate the tenth anniversary of Lithuania's Independence. On November 18 of the same year, the President of Lithuania Antanas Smetona attended the unveiling ceremony of the monument.
After World War II, when the Soviet Union occupied Lithuania, Soviet army soldiers were buried in this square, a bronze soldier sculpture was erected, the monument itself was cleaned of national symbols, and a red star was placed on top of the monument. In 1969, the Independence Monument was demolished. After the start of the Lithuanian Reorganization Movement, in 1989, the monument to the Tenth Anniversary of Independence was rebuilt at the expense of the residents of Joniškis, exactly the same as it stood between the wars.
Now the Independence Monument is one of the most prominent highlights of the city center, and the surroundings of the object have been renovated and adapted for visiting.
