The monument was built in 1939 and was dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the Independence of Lithuania and the Riflemen's Union. It was designed and built by the Riflemen's Brothers Žiedai from the village of Garneliai, the Riflemen's Union's Vyžuonai Riflemen's Company. As was customary in Lithuanian towns of that time, a meeting of local organizations and leaders was convened in Vyžuonai. The leadership of the Vyžuonai Riflemen's Company, having promised the parish municipality support, undertook to carry out the work of erecting the monument and a monument construction committee was formed, consisting of the parish headman P. Keblys, the company commander, resp. junior ltn. J. Striška, the platoon commander V. Tamošiūnas, the leader of the rifle women's platoon J. Striškienė and the platoon commander J. Tuskenis. The committee took care of the funds, the monument's design and materials. By erecting the monument and with the help of local residents, large construction costs were avoided. The purpose of the monument is defined by the carved inscription "To the Heroes of the Nation - Vyžuoniškiai". During the Soviet era, the monument was demolished and buried. In 1989, the monument was excavated, and in 1990 it was restored and unveiled.
